I was born in Oklahoma, but I grew up in the mountains and deserts of Northern New Mexico. As a young man in love with the outdoors, there was no better place. By the time I was fifteen, I had hiked and backpacked over hundreds of miles of trails. I am the oldest of five children. I am a father and a grandfather. In 1973, my father moved us to Idaho in order to farm. I have lived in Idaho since.

I graduated from Valley High School in rural Jerome County and then attended the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls and Boise State University. I attended law school at night at Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon while working full-time at the Statesman-Journal newspaper in Salem. I finished a four-year law school program in three years and graduated in the top 15% of my class. 

I started practicing law in 1988. In addition to practicing law, I have engaged in a variety of farming, business and real estate ventures. I started farming right out of high school. And, when I was a farmer, I was the twentieth generation of my family to be farmers or ranchers. My daughter is a rancher in Wyoming and is the twenty-first generation of farmers and ranchers in my family. 

Several years ago, after coaching high school students for many years in debate and mock trial competitions, I fulfilled my desire to educate young people and became a teacher. I taught American Government, United States History and Law for nine years. I have returned to the full-time practice of law but many of my students remain friends. Some are clients. 

My favorite activities are working in my yard, carpentry, astronomy and backpacking. But, probably my favorite activity is traveling. My wife and I have traveled to 31 countries.
